Stockbridge Bowl panel debates seaplane, wake boat bans
Other Committee · Meeting of September 10, 2026
Stockbridge Bowl panel pushes forward on dam repairs, a seaplane bylaw and new wake-boat scrutiny. Town liaison Michael Canales told the Stockbridge Bowl Stewardship Committee an engineering report upgraded the dam's condition from "unsafe" to "poor," with cost estimates once pegged near $2 million now expected to run several times higher; no state or federal dredging grant currently exists. Committee member Don Chabot's subcommittee wants a meeting with town counsel on banning seaplanes, citing a pilot's "1.87 seconds" to react to an object on the water and a stalled prohibition at Lake Congamond.
Member Gary Miller, citing a Vermont Sport article, warned wake boats would be "really bad on Stockbridge Bowl," pointing to erosion and sediment disruption documented elsewhere. The committee approved its August 27 minutes 5-0 with one abstention and deferred a proposed wind-tracking study of algae blooms to next year.
