Fire Station Panel Reviews One-Story, Two-Story Options

Other Committee · Meeting of October 2, 2026

Stockbridge's fire station building committee weighed one-story versus two-story designs for a new fire and EMS headquarters, with no site vote yet. Architect John McMillan of CBA pegged costs at roughly $20.8 million for one story and $21.5 million for two stories, after correcting an earlier $22.3 million multiplication error. Deputy Fire Chief Mike Maher favored a two-story layout at the Department of Public Works site to cut the footprint, while consultant Aaron Singer questioned the cost of drive-through apparatus bays.

McMillan said the state Architectural Access Board has "never issued a waiver" for an elevator-free second floor in a new fire station. Members also flagged odor concerns from the adjacent sewage treatment plant's sludge tank. West Stockbridge pays about 40 percent of operating costs but nothing toward construction.

Next steps include geotechnical borings, a wetlands survey and utility capacity checks before a late-October follow-up meeting.
