Fire Station Panel Narrows DPW Site Design Options

Other Committee · Meeting of September 17, 2026

Stockbridge fire station panel keeps DPW site alive, reaches out to two land trusts. Architect John of CBA told the Fire Station Planning Committee the combined fire-EMS facility now totals roughly 20,000 gross square feet, up from a 16,000-square-foot space-needs tally, across four possible layouts near the town's DPW and wastewater site. One Glendale Road parcel was ruled infeasible on setbacks; a second, larger parcel remains possible pending a survey.

Firefighter Kevin argued for a drive-through apparatus bay, saying backing trucks into a station is "one of the more dangerous times when it comes to operating a fire truck." Members Michael and Bruce will approach Laurel Hill and a nearby botanical garden within two weeks to gauge interest in selling land, while one member said the town could pursue eminent domain but that it "would not be very popular." A two-story design could add roughly $100,000 a year in elevator costs. Both the minutes and adjournment passed by unanimous voice vote.
