Stockbridge Green Committee backs electric lawn equipment purchasing policy
Other Committee · Meeting of July 8, 2026
Stockbridge Green Committee votes to push electric lawn equipment policy to select board. The committee unanimously recommended the select board adopt a revised purchasing policy encouraging battery-powered alternatives to gas leaf blowers, lawnmowers and string trimmers, after member Steve cited worker health risks: "It's like putting your mouth near a tailpipe of a car." A Berkshire Regional Planning Commission staffer briefed the committee on a state fight over roughly $1 billion in proposed Mass Save cuts, now in conference committee, and new rules requiring towns to begin accepting large-scale solar and battery storage applications by July 1 or October 1, with only 12 months to review them. The committee is also finishing a roughly $1 million Green Communities grant application due August 7, working with vendor Select Energy.
"There are a number of systemic flaws with the program," the BRPC staffer said of Mass Save, "but when it works, it does work really well."
