Sewer Commissioners Call Oct. 19 Special Town Meeting
Water · Meeting of August 26, 2026
Great Barrington calls an October 19 special town meeting to decide a $350,000 sewer energy grant. Meeting as Sewer Commissioners, the Select Board voted unanimously, with two members absent, after DPC Engineering's Justin Skelly and plant chief operator Shea Gibbs detailed corroded tanks, ruptured pipes and failing electrical panels at facilities largely dating to the 1970s. The grant is tied to a $3.9 million aeration upgrade, part of a possible $20.7 million overhaul that could also draw on a low-interest state revolving-fund loan and a pending $3 million Long Island Sound nitrogen grant.
As of June 30 the sewer enterprise fund's retained earnings stood at $6,067,855, dropping to $5,146,495 after town meeting appropriations. "It's going to fail if rates go up tremendously," one member warned, while the chair, known in the meeting only as Liz, said "there comes a time when you just have to do it."
