Cemetery Panel OKs Vault Repair, Gravestone Study
Other Committee · Meeting of August 25, 2026
Stockbridge Cemetery Commission commits $61,000 to vault repairs and historic gravestone work. Members voted unanimously to hire Preservation Inc. for $5,000 to prepare bid documents for masonry restoration of the cemetery's vault, funded by $44,575 reallocated from a prior Community Preservation Committee grant. The commission also advanced two more Preservation Inc. proposals toward this fall's CPC grant cycle: a $38,500 conservation assessment and a $17,500 transcription project covering roughly 600 gravestones in the cemetery's Section 1.
"We've spent much of our trust fund monies, and we don't want to run that down to the bottom of the barrel," the chair said of the CPC strategy. Separately, the panel dropped a slate-paving plan for the flagpole area that drew bids over $10,000, opting instead to install two already-purchased memorial benches, and agreed to ask the Highway Department to remove overgrown hedges hiding restored headstones in the cemetery's old section.
