250th Committee Hears Tribal Response to Declaration
Other Committee · Meeting of July 30, 2026
Stockbridge 250th Committee hears tribe's Revolution-era history, finalizes passport prizes. Rich Bradway, the committee's liaison to the Stockbridge-Munsee Band of Mohican Indians, read the tribe's July 4 response to the Declaration of Independence's "merciless Indian savages" line, telling members "we are not relics of history, we are a living nation." The town's planned Revolutionary War Memorial will carry 368 names, 93 of them Mohican, but remains stalled while the committee searches for a foundry able to cast bronze plaques large enough, with Veterans Day as an unconfirmed target. Bradway said 12 percent of Stockbridge-Munsee members have served in the armed forces, versus 3 to 4 percent nationally, and roughly 50 tribal members are expected for the eventual dedication.
The committee, which has about $8,300 left in its budget, also set passport-contest prizes: a $400 "Standing Lincoln" statue replica as grand prize and Norman Rockwell Museum tickets as runner-up. Minutes from July 13 were approved unanimously.
