Select Board Delays Vote on Veteran Banner Program

Select Board · Meeting of September 14, 2026

Williamstown Select Board tables a vote on $125 veteran memorial banners after residents object to process and messaging. Curtis DeRocher, the regional Veteran Services director, pitched the Hometown Hero Banner program, already approved in six of eight Northern Berkshire towns, with North Adams growing from 132 to roughly 180 banners in a year. Residents Anna Moriarty-Lev and Anton Hassenkampff pushed back, with Moriarty-Lev saying "I do not see a way that this program is actually directly benefiting living veterans." The board, chaired by Peter Beck, took no vote, pending further outreach.

In other action, the board unanimously approved a one-day Williams College liquor license, renamed "selectmen" regulations to "select board" in 66 places, appointed Cosmo Catalano Jr. to the Conservation Commission, and voted 5-0 to enter executive session. Town Manager Bob also reported Berkshire Gas has no capacity for new natural gas hookups in Northern Berkshire.
