Fire Chief Details Rising Apparatus Costs for Panel

Finance Committee · Meeting of August 20, 2026

Williamstown Finance Committee hears fire chief's warning on apparatus costs, works through $21 million fire station bond. The fire chief told the committee a replacement ladder truck identical to the district's current platform tower now costs $2.4 million, and that the district's aging Engine 3 will likely be replaced with a roughly $600,000 to $625,000 "mini pumper." He blamed venture-capital consolidation of apparatus manufacturers, saying "it's a national epidemic, really," and cited diesel fuel up 114 percent and turnout gear up 104 percent since 2020. Separately, committee members reconciled the roughly $21 million bond-financed new fire station, with about $350,000 still owed to contractor Consigli and an independent audit due by mid-October.

The committee also opened, without deciding, whether to sell or offer a triple-net lease on the district's now-vacant former fire station. Minutes were approved unanimously; no other votes were taken.
