Finance Panel Builds Data Tool To Compare Towns

Finance Committee · Meeting of September 9, 2026

Williamstown Finance Committee previews a 27-town data tool built to prepare for a possible future override. Chair Suzanne Stinson, using the AI assistant Claude as a research aide, compared Williamstown against similar towns on population (about 7,500 year-round residents), family income (roughly $150,000), and school spending ($21,704 per pupil versus roughly $33,000 in parts of Southern Berkshire County). Member Fred Puddester questioned the per-pupil gap, while member Molly Magavern warned against using comparison data too broadly, saying "I think we should be careful about just throwing out a comparison group." Remote member Donna Quirk asked whether census data captures fully remote workers like herself.

No votes were taken; member Melissa Cragg will attend a November Massachusetts Municipal Association event to gather data from other finance committees.
