Williamstown health board weighs early local kratom regulation

Williamstown Board of Health moves to get ahead of a statewide kratom ban rather than wait a year for state rules. Chair Devan Bartels said Massachusetts retailers, including Williamstown's, must pull kratom and 7-OH products by August 28 under Gov. Maura Healey's emergency order, which reclassifies kratom as a schedule I substance.
Health Inspector Ruth Russell is coordinating with police on the new classification and planned to attend a state webinar the same day. Tobacco control specialist Jim Wislus told the board Williamstown's existing tobacco regulations are sound but flagged a "nicotine-free generation" policy trend spreading statewide. Separately, Russell reported a five-year-old, un-replaced ventilation filter at a 330 Cole Ave. rental unit under a mold and moisture complaint, with Bartels noting, "We can't conclude that the system is not working until you have clean filters." The board approved its June 29 minutes and set its next meeting for September 8 at 9 a.m.
