Board of Health Moves to Standardize Fines
Board of Health · Meeting of September 8, 2026
Williamstown Board of Health moves toward standardizing fines across town health bylaws. Chair Dr. Devan Bartels proposed replacing a warning-based fee system with a uniform $100-$200-$300 structure for first, second and third offenses, calling the current approach too lenient: "we're being too easy to dismiss." Health Inspector Ruth Russell reported ongoing moisture and ventilation problems at 330 Coal Avenue despite new filters, and a Stratton Road resident, Will Maven, told the board bed bugs persist at the Highland Woods senior complex despite repeated treatments by Hearthway's vendor, Orkin.
Member Marzio Gusmaroli announced an October 20 public forum on the Berkshire County Mosquito Control Project, and member Sandra Goodbody reported farmers market outreach surfacing concerns about homelessness, transportation access and landlord responsiveness. No bylaw votes were taken; the board set its next meeting for October 5, 2026.
