WILLIAMSTOWN — The Williamstown Finance Committee said the town is likely one to three years from needing a Proposition 2½ override. Chair Suzanne Stinson led a joint session with school officials on rising costs, including two straight years of roughly 16 percent health insurance increases. Member Molly Magavern reported that among 27 comparable Massachusetts communities, there have been 40 override attempts since 2016 with only 11 succeeding.
Member Melissa Cragg questioned last year's town meeting process for funding a math interventionist position, saying decisions made item-by-item lack full context. Stinson responded that "you are now making a decision on that without that other context of other needs." The committee also flagged a U.S. Census Bureau error that inflated Williamstown's 2025 population estimate to 9,513, far above the roughly 5,000 year-round residents officials cite.
