Board directs staff to study East Street speed humps

Select Board · Meeting of October 5, 2026

Great Barrington Select Board hears a year of data showing East Street swamped by traffic, directs staff to study speed humps. Police Chief Adam Carlotto reported the residential street carries roughly 200,000 vehicles annually with compliance as low as 22 percent on comparable side streets, while residents described cars hitting 70 miles per hour; one, Aaron of Gilmore Avenue, said "it is insane" and offered to help pay for speed humps himself. Auditor Tom Scanlon of Scanlon & Associates delivered a clean fiscal 2025 opinion but flagged a $9.7 million OPEB liability against an $8 million unassigned general fund balance, about 21 percent of the town's $39 million budget.

The board also heard renewed pleas over the Housatonic Water Works crisis, with resident Donna Jacobs saying the system has been under a water emergency since December 24, 2025, and drafting a letter asking Attorney General Andrea Campbell to intervene. Separately, the board unanimously approved two liquor licenses, two National Grid pole petitions, and $291.10 in combined donations to the town libraries and Claire McTeague Senior Center.
