Stockbridge Conservation Commission approves planting and rail conditions for Rattlesnake Mountain Road culvert project. The commission voted unanimously at its July 28 meeting to request weathering-steel guardrails and eight native wetland-tolerant trees planted on the south side of the road as conditions for a state-backed culvert replacement that would restore wildlife passage at a perched stream crossing on Rattlesnake Mountain Road. Members rejected galvanized metal rails over concerns about zinc leaching into aquatic habitat, noting galvanized surfaces produce toxicity levels that kill fish and invertebrates.

The commission agreed its guardrail preference is advisory only — the state holds final authority — but the planting requirement falls within its jurisdiction. Separately, a member reported that contractor GEI found approximately 39 water chestnut plants in Stockbridge Bowl this season, down from roughly 1,300 the prior year, with monitoring required for up to 10 years because seeds can remain viable in sediment.
