Stockbridge Bowl Commission Defers Lake Plan Vote, Hears Dam and Dredging Updates

LENOX — April 23, 2026 — Stockbridge Bowl Stewardship Commission defers final lake management plan vote and debates AI-generated water quality priorities. Meeting April 23 in Stockbridge, the commission voted to incorporate an addendum drafted by member Don into the lake management plan's executive summary, delaying a final approval vote to its next meeting pending a clean final draft. Commission member Lewis presented three documents generated using AI tools Perplexity and Claude — summarizing consultant Ben Burpee's GZA technical lake report, proposing a priority implementation plan, and listing near-term management targets — with hypoxia identified as the lake's most critical underlying problem. A harvesting permit dispute with state regulators over the meaning of "one pass" language has put the commission's $15,000 water chestnut removal program in limbo for the summer. Town liaison Michael Canalis reported that all current-fiscal-year dredging milestones have been met without additional town funds, that initial dam assessment work has been contracted, and that a hydrological seepage study will be completed this summer ahead of a town meeting appropriations request for repairs. Resident Anita Schwerner publicly questioned why a Select Board warrant article proposing to dissolve the commission had been brought this year, and why Select Board representative Jamie voted against the commission's $2,500 professional advice budget — the only such appropriation awarded to any commission this budget cycle.
